St. Malo - Around Town

My love affair is not just with Paris but also with the rest of France which is why B and I packed up our bags a couple weeks ago and headed to Brittany.  Destination: St. Malo, a small town on the coast that is perfect for a quick getaway.  If you are planning a trip to France, consider Brittany's northern coast.  It is gorgeous and filled with history.  Over the next few days I will be posting about the time we spent there.  Today, I bring you some photos from discovering the town itself as well as the surrounding areas.

In the background of this picture is St. Malo, a tiny walled city virtually surrounded by water.

The ramparts make for a gorgeous scene.

And you can walk on them too, which gives great views of the ocean and the town.

This was a frequent sight while we were there: old men playing pétanque.

Just off the coast is a small island you can visit if the tides are low enough to walk to it.

We never timed the tides right to go to the little island, but were able to explore the cliffs of St. Malo that are under water during high tide.

Thank goodness I wasn't wearing heels.

In the crevices of the cliffs I found none other than mussels!  How awesome is that?

The town hall is built right into the ramparts.

Biking is a great way to see the neighboring towns.

On our bike ride, we stopped at a WWII memorial.

Which had a beautiful park and gorgeous views of the ocean.

Note how many layers I have on (I'm literally wearing a turtleneck, a sweater, TWO jackets and a scarf).  It was just a wee bit chilly for a bike ride that day.

At the end of the day, a walk along the ramparts at sunset is a must.
