Canal St. Martin

The 10th arrondisement of Paris centers around a canal that many people never see when they come to Paris.  It is a bit outside the "tourist" zone, but that is what makes it nice.  On a beautiful day, you can stroll down the canal and see another side of Paris.  There are plenty of cafes, restaurants and bars just waiting for you to stop in for a few minutes.  The area is frequented by a young crowd, giving it a bohmeian vibe at times.

It is always entertaining to watch the French police trying to catch kids engaging in illegal activities.  It seems like they never can outsmart those wily, young Frenchmen.

Apparently, there is a contigent in the 10th that likes to fish the canal.  I'm not so sure I want to buy what they are reeling in, but it sure is a sight to see old men sitting contentedly with a fishing pole in the middle of Paris.

On our last trip to Paris in November, my husband and I spent the day wandering through this area, it was great, not crowded, full of French film history and the light was wonderful for photos. Loved the bridges and factory architecture as well.

It's definitely a different speed when you are in that area compared to other places in Paris. A nice change of pace.
